Fly Swap 2: The Nymphs!!!!

Postby 1080tommy » Feb Thu 23, 2012 8:16 am

Alright, so who's in???? I can take delivery of the flies and divide them up and send them out. I am in! I have never tied nymphs so this will be a good learning experience for me as was the last fly swap. Let's get an idea of how many people are in and then we can come up with numbers and dates.

Haha. Jinx. I just deleted my thread to keep it all in one place.

Ideas on timelines? April 7th?

Should we have a limit on number of participants?

Everyone interested just list your name so we can get a head count. This will give us an idea of how many people, how many flies each person needs to tie and what date for completion.

I thought that title would provoke some good responses!!!!! :D

Still waiting for time to buy a new vise, but unless otherwise notified I'd be in.

I think I'll tie either Al's Lace Caddis Pupa, the Carrot Nymph, or the twenty Incher stone haha it's so hard to decide.

I have a small supply of #12s but a ton of #14s, do you think it's neccessary to all tie the same size? I mean becuase if someone ties a baetis larva fly and another ties a stonefly, they'd probably have to be different sizes.

I think if we all tie the same size we might want to limit the patterns to a certain imitation so we can avoid this problem, or just give full reign on hook size and imitation. I'm cool with either way.

SJS - The green rear of the fly is marabou, the white body is Arctic Fox.

Concerning the nymph swap : Whatt we've done in the past, is either have a Theme like we did on this one, or have it be imitation specific ( stoneflys, baetis, hoppers, crayfish.....) Hook size is entirely up to the tyer, no reason to say this is a #12 Size swap although you certainly could do it, but you would limit yourselves severely.

The key to any good flybox is a wide range of sizes, imitating all stages of life.

To be honest, we really never use anything bigger than an 18 out here with the exception of streamers :) The vast bulk of my flies out here are dries in #16 - #28, nymphs/emergers from #16 - #32. Terrestrials in a # 6 - #10.

I am not partial to either. I split my trout fishing between the Driftless and back home in Northern California. However, I am interested in what those patterns that lit up the West fork of the Kickapoo are. I may tie some up!

The fishing is really cool up there. It is a lot harder than where I was used to fishing out west. I am headed up there soon to do some fishing. If I catch something will throw up a post.

I went up there last year and didnt catch anything but it was beautiful. I posted up here about it.

So looks like we have eight commited to tie. Cool. What about dates and how many flies. I forget how many people we had for the last one but if we do three flies a piece like the last one that would be 24 flies. Hey JW I know you got some stuff going on at BPS but let me know if that is correct and we can then come up with dates for completion.

You got it Nick. The idea is that each person gets 3 flies when it's all said and done. The way I understood the last one was that you get one to fish with, and two back ups in case you loose that fly. So with 8 people it would be 24 flies per person. JW correct me if I am wrong.

P.S just wondering because I have not gotten my flies from the first swap??? No biggie seing as I do not even have a fly rod yet??? :D I gues I just have a special kindof crazy when it comes to fishing!!!!!

1080 Tommy I think you are correct. I just had a brain fart in my second to last post.

I ordered all the materials I am going to need to tie up the pattern I am throwing in and I cant wait to get started on this. I can put up a picture of an example if people are interested. I am going to tie this pattern I saw called the lite brite caddis, supposed to work and looks cool and it is a play on a traditional pattern.

If there are 8 tyers, each person submits 21 flies - you exclude yourself. Each person is actually tying for the other 7.

Ill look into the missing package tomorrow and see if i can get a trace on them. Let ya know asap.

Would any of the guys in the swap want some free pheasant feathers? I cured these skins a few years ago, and they have been hanging up in my garage for the last two years.

Image

I might be able to send some in when I ship the flies If that would be alright with 1080tommy. I was thinking they could be distributed along with the flies if anyone would be interested in having some.

I'm not a pro at curing skins, but at the time I followed some instructions I found on the internet (I used some sort of borax solution). After two years, I'm sure there pretty clean and dry by now.

I think we should give plenty of time for guys to get stuff together though. Gimme some ideas and we can make a decision and get this thing moving!!!!

Mind setting it back a little later BFA? It's be nice if I could have some time during my spring break for these.

Either that or I could settle with a fly I'm a little bit more comfortable with tying (might not look as cool as Al's Laced Caddis Pupa)

I would be perfect if it was something more like 4/3
